Food & Fado
PLACES TO LISTEN FADO
Lisbon has many places to listen to fado, but you can choose from three different styles of places to listen to fado. There are the so-called "Casas de Fado" (Fado Houses), the "Fado Experiences" and the "Typical Restaurants". The "Fado Houses" are restaurants prepared for tourists and decorated to provide a show with professional fadistas. They are more formal and accept large groups. In the past, the great stars of Fado have been harassed to sing exclusively in these Houses because they attract crowds to hear them. But nowadays they do not expect to find a Carlos do Carmo or Mariza, because they currently act for thousands of people, in the big rooms of the show around the world. With the "Fado Experiences" you will have a guide who will explain the history of Fado, show you the most emblematic places and finally go to a local to hear Fado and taste something. The "Typical Restaurants" with fado has a relaxed atmosphere and allow amateur, or even you, to sing Fado Vadio, which means that everyone sings what they want and sometimes two singers exchange improvised lyrics.

LISBON LOVERS
The only thing that matters is to feel the fado. The fado is not meant to be sung; it simply happens. You feel it, you don’t understand it and you don’t explain it.
